Access Aware -Working towards an accessible city
In partnership with our citizens, we're working towards making the City of Nedlands an accessible place to live, work and use services.
In the 1998 Australian Bureau of Statistics Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers, 20% of Western Australians reported having a disability, an increase of 25% in the past two decades. For the City of Nedlands this translates into approximately 4268 people with a disability living in the community and many more accessing facilities and services such as hospitals, entertainment and recreational facilities.
As members of the community people with disabilities, their families and carers have the same rights as other people to access services and facilities. Access is the opportunity for people with disabilities to participate in all aspects of their community without needing specific assistance.
In an accessible community:
- services are adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities;
- information is provided clearly and in a range of formats;
- disability awareness training is provided to customer service staff;
- access to buildings and facilities is improved; and
- people with disabilities can participate in public consultation and decision-making processes.
There are a number of ways you can help in building an equitable and accessible community:
- Ask for a free copy of our Access Awareness Booklet (contact details below).
- Become a member of the City of Nedlands Access Reference Group.
- Sign up as a community member for our Access Consultation List.
An advertisement is placed in The Post inviting community nominations for the Access Group and Consultation List. If you would like to be notified of this and other Access events taking place in the City, please send your email address to the Manager Community Development (see below).
The City has developed an access aware! logo and stickers. The face in the centre of the access action! logo is based on a stylised "a", the first letter of access. It is contained within closed ellipses, to show that people with disabilities are part of and should be included in our community, not left outside it. access aware! has an exclamation mark to indicate developing an accessible community is an active thing.
We encourage you to put an access aware! sticker in a prominent position and to take up the challenge of helping us ensure the wonderful things that make Nedlands such a great place to live are available to all members of its community. More stickers are available on request.
All of the City's information is available in different formats such as large print, braille, disk or audio-tape on request. Please contact:
