Accessible Communities Grants
Background
In 2003 the City of Nedlands initiated an Accessible Communities Grants program to encourage local community initiatives that enhance the lives and wellbeing
of local people with disabilities and their families and assist in developing
an accessible community.
Aim
An accessible and inclusive community is one in which broad participation in all aspects of community life is welcomed and maximised.
The Accessible Communities Grants program aims to support, encourage and
recognise the local “champions” who provide such opportunities for increasing
community accessibility and inclusiveness, by undertaking activities that enhance
the lives of local people with disabilities, their families, carers and friends.
In particular, projects that help break down social isolation; strengthen local
support networks; and increase and encourage local community interaction and
inclusiveness will be viewed favourably.

Organisations applying for grants may consider focusing their activities on or around the annual International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being. The Day also seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of the integration of people with disability in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
Community activities and events are held throughout Western Australia during International Day of People with Disability.
The IDPwD official website, www.idpwd.com.au will provide resource material such as posters, information kits and an online events calendar for staging events.
Applications for activities designed to increase community participation in these celebrations are encouraged.
