Smoke Nuisance
Wood Heaters
A poorly operated wood heater causes air pollution and significantly contributes to the haze that Perth frequently experiences and also exacerbates respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma and emphysema.
The key to the correct operation of wood heaters is to:
- Only burn dry, well-seasoned wood.
- Keep the fire burning brightly at all times. A well-oxygenated fire can be smoke free.
- Ensure the chimney is regularly cleaned and extends at least 1 metre above the roof's ridge line so that it doesn't directly funnel into your or your neighbour's property.
By adhering to these simple measures you can minimise the amount of air pollution and the number of smoke complaints in your neighbourhood.
Burning Off
Burning off is unwelcome as it creates atmospheric pollution and nuisance to neighbours. It is an offence, under the Health Act to cause nuisance smoke.
Nedlands Health Local Laws requires that permission be obtained from the Manager Health Services. Requests must be made in writing.
With the provision of rubbish bins, recycling bins and bulk rubbish collections, there is no need to burn rubbish in the City of Nedlands.

Litter Reporting
Throwing or dropping litter, even unintentionally, is an offence according to the Litter Act 1979. Dumping rubbish of any kind on any land not specified as a waste facility is also considered littering and attracts the same penalties under the Litter Act.
The Keep Australia Beautiful Council (WA) has a Litter Reporter Scheme where littering associated with vehicles can be reported.
