To support the Western Suburbs Greening Plan, specifically the "Greening Private Land" strategy, the City of Nedlands offers subsidised seedlings to its residents at the start of each winter.

There are many benefits to growing local plants. The plants themselves are often stunning in flower, have attractive foliage and can attract bushbirds and butterflies to your garden.
Many exotic garden plants are hardy enough to spread into bushland and when they do invade, they severely damage the habitat for wildflowers and wildlife. Conversely, the plants available in this scheme support local wildlife and do not damage the bushland.
Many of the seedlings available in this scheme are naturally compact and attractive, however, like all garden plants, these plants will require some maintenance to suit a garden situation.
Seedlings are made available at the start of winter to allow seedlings sufficient time to establish in the wetter months. As the seedlings provided in this scheme are local to Nedlands they are adapted to the local climate and do not require a high level of watering. A garden of local plants is both environmentally responsible and 'waterwise'.
The intention of this scheme is to provide local plants for private gardens, if you wish to establish local native plants on verges you will need to complete a verge development application and receive permission from the Horticultural Technical Officer, who can be contacted on 9273 3500.
