Food Safety

Good hygiene and food safety practices can prevent food poisoning and other illnesses. The City of Nedlands carries out routine food safety and hygiene assessments of all business premises preparing food for sale to the general public.

Assessments are carried out to assess compliance of the food business with the requirements of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (Australia Only). Assessments examine the structure of the premises and the practices carried out by the food handlers when storing, preparing and serving food.

Strategies to ensure the safety of food provided within the City

  • Sampling of locally produced foods and comparison to National Standards
  • Investigating complaints about food and food handling practices
  • Regular inspections of food premesis (conducted by the City's Environmental Health Officers)

Any person wishing to set up a food business (including temporary stall or outlet) within the City of Nedlands must first obtain approval from the City.

Examples of some food businesses that require approval:

  • Cafés/restaurants
  • Food stalls (e.g. sausage sizzles, cake stalls)
  • Mobile food vendors (including coffee vans and ice cream vans)
  • Home manufacturers

Online Food Safety Training

Online Food Safety TrainingThe City of Nedlands is pleased to provide FREE and unlimited access to an exciting new training program that will assist food businesses and their employees in gaining valuable skills and knowledge in food safety and hygiene.

This program is presented in an interactive, easy to follow, and entertaining format which includes the ability for the user to print off an acknowledgement form and a certificate upon completion of the program that can be kept as a part of your staff records.

This training program will assist food business managers in ensuring all staff are trained in this important area and thereby reducing any risk of food borne illness resulting from poor food handling practices.

It is recommended that all food handlers participate in this training. This is a great opportunity to provide all your staff with training that would otherwise cost your business money and a great deal more in time.

Upon completion of the training program please use the “notify” functionality confirming that the training program has been completed. The notifying details to be included on the notify screen is as follows:
• Name – Environmental Health Services, City of Nedlands
• Email address – council@nedlands.wa.gov.au

For further information on the food safety topics within this training program, please contact the City’s Environmental Health Service on 9273 3500.
