Sustainable lfestyles in the City of Nedlands are easy, affordable and achievable. Sustainability measures can be undertaken in your garden, your home, and even in the food you eat!
What is sustainability?
Sustainability is defined as the capacity to endure. This means, ensuring the environmental, economic and social needs are fulfilled in a way that does not hinder the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Clean up Australia Day: Join the City of Nedlands annual Clean Up Australia Day event in March

Earth Hour: Turn your lights off for one hour in March each year and show your commitment to reducting greenhouse emissions

National Tree Day: Join the City of Nedlands annual tree planting day
- Sustainable September: Look at the calendar and attend a Sustainable September event. The events page of the City's website will show how the City is getting involved

Watewise Garden Competition: Transform your verge or front garden in to a Waterwise garden and have the chance to win $2000 in prizes.Competition opens in May, and closes in September. Judging takes place in October.

WESROC Native Plant Subsidy Scheme: During May go down to Apace on Johannah Street, North Fremantle, and purchase up to 80 native plants for $1.50, and transform your garden in to a Waterwise haven.

Support local businesses: Reduce your Footprint by buying local products, from local outlets

Fair trade: Buy products with the Fair Trade logo to ensure they were produced sustainably, and that the Third World producers receive a fair price for their products

Travelsmart: choose smart travel options
- Get an in-home energy audit: Environment House offers in-home 90 minute energy audits for residents for $150.00. They will measure your energy consumption, check your appliances and hot water system, advise on eco-renovations and do some eco-tradwork (for an additional cost). - Reduce your waste: buy a subsidised worm farm or compost bin from the City, and reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill!
- Earth Carers: Attend an Earth Carers course and learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle!
