Sustainable Development

Sustainable development aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.  This means considering all facets of society and ways of life, including the environment, the economy, and society. The conjunction where these three elements meet is considered true sustainable development.

These considerations are easy to do when planning your home. With regards to planning and development there are number of avenues that can be pursued to assist in ensuring development in the City of Nedlands is sustainable. These include house orientation to take advantage of the sun, careful planning of the land taking in to consideration waterwise garden habits, and self-sufficiency techniques such as vegetable gardens to reduce lawn size, energy generation methods such as solar and photovoltaic, and rainwater tanks.

Sustainable development ultimately has a number of practical benefits such as reducing your energy usage and power bill, and contributing to cleaner air and continued access to clean water.

When designing your new house or extensions be sure to discuss with your architect or designer about incorporating sustainable design.  This includes passive solar orientation, solar panels and energy efficiency and water efficiency.
