Walk this way to have your say on 8 Sayer Street: Allen Park Master Plan in action

Swanbourne’s Walkway (officially 8 Sayer Street) could officially become an A-class reserve – and the City of Nedlands wants to hear whether the community is for or against the idea.

Identified as a key concern in the recently adopted Allen Park Master Plan, the City is looking at making a formal request to Lands Minister Rita Saffioti for the State to officially change the Crown grant to the City of Nedlands (for homes for the aged) to an A-class reserve.

A-class reserves, such as Kings Park and various national parks, receive the greatest degree of protection because they are considered to have high conservation or community value.

City of Nedlands Mayor Max Hipkins said the request would effectively preserve the land for future generations for recreational use and environmental conservation.

“The City has listened to the concerns and issues raised by the community and has developed a proposal to achieve what the community is asking for,” he said.

“The area has been managed for conservation for more than 20 years, in conjunction with the local community, and is considered of vital importance for its heritage, environmental and community value.

“As a result of the Allen Park Master Plan being endorsed by Council, it’s proposed the land tenure should be resolved to preserve the area for remnant bushland and as a connection walkway.

“This can be achieved by changing the classification of the land and the entire lot being incorporated into the neighbouring A-class reserve.”

For more information, visit yourvoice.nedlands.wa.gov.au and make a submission supporting or objecting to the proposal by 5pm, 9 March.

Submissions relating to 8 Sayer Street made during the Allen Park Master Plan consultation process will be used if the request is made to the Minister – but people are welcome to make another submission.

A report will be prepared for Council to decide whether to proceed with the formal request.
