Background Information

The City is lucky to have approximately 3.2 kilometres of scenic foreshore along the Swan River.
The river is currently separated from the foreshore with a combination of limestone block sea wall and precast concrete panels. The ownership and maintenance of the wall is shared responsibility between the City of Nedlands and the Swan River Trust.

During the 2013/14 financial year $155,000 was spent rebuilding collapsed sections of the wall to make it safe and fit for purpose again.
Due to many reasons including age, overtopping of the wall during storm events and boat wave activity most of the river wall is in a bad state, is failing in places and is in need of repair
Over a number of years, the City has been successful in attracting grant funding which along with matching funds from the City, has been used to carry out maintenance and refurbishment works only on the wall on a reactive basis.

Long Term Planning

The City has investigated a range of different long term solutions that could be undertaken to restore the river wall fully.
The options investigated take into consideration costs, sustainability, community interaction with the river, long term viability, aesthetics and the natural environment.
Proposals to install a mixture of rock revetment, pocket beaches and limestone wall along the river were developed in 2014/15 .

Community Consultation

Between November - December 2014, the City consulted the community on the proposed treatments for the river wall. This consultation is now closed.  The information sheet used during this consultation, showing each of the treatments proposed, is available in the link below.

86% of people that responded to the community consultation where in support of the proposal to carry out major works, with 94% of respondents in favour of adding a ‘rock ‘revetment’ treatment along stretches of the wall where it would protect and increase the life of the wall behind.

A full report was put to Council on 24 February 2015, this can be found on the City’s website at, item number TS03.15.  The progression of this project is currently pending the allocation of a budget, and there are currently no timescales available to indicate when any further works may be carried out.
