Gordon Davies (2026)
Gordon Davies was a resident in Dalkeith from 1955 until 2016 (except for the period from 1957 to 1959 when he lived in Gnowangerup where he was teaching in the Junior High School. He was then appointed back to Dalkeith Primary School and taught there for three years from 1959 to 1962).
While teaching at Dalkeith Primary School and coaching the school football team, he also coached the District under 14, under 16 and under 18 football teams in the District competition.
During this time he developed an interest in real estate, but the State Government wouldn’t allow him to have a job outside teaching, so he applied for the position of Accountancy Master at Christchurch Grammar School, who agreed he could work in real estate as long as it didn’t interfere with his teaching. He subsequently set up his own real estate company, which he continues to operate with several name changes.
However, by the end of his 13th year at Christchurch, the business was interfering with his teaching, so he resigned from his teaching role. Gordon went full time into his real estate career in the Western Suburbs in 1965, forming Eivers, Dyson & Partners, driven by a profound affinity for the area. He champions the Western Suburbs for its convenience, encompassing a wealth of facilities such as the Swan River, proximity to beaches, UWA, major hospitals, schools, yacht and sporting clubs. Embraced by lush greenery, it is a garden-like suburb with abundant trees, parks and ovals, benefitting from the moderating influence of both river and ocean breezes.
During this period, Gordon had extensive dealings with the City of Nedlands and its regulations, getting to know several Councillors and assisting them with real estate matters. As a result, he was invited to serve on the Sustainable Nedlands Committee, a role he fulfilled for 20 years and also enjoyed chairing some community precinct planning evenings finding out what residents wanted in their locality. During that time, he supported many community projects and organisations, particularly as a major sponsor of the Nedlands and Dalkeith Tennis Clubs for approximately 60 and 50 years respectively.
For a number of years, Gordon donated his auctioneering skills to the annual Brian Simmonds Art Auction, a fundraising event held at Tresillian. He also proposed and offered to fund a demonstration sustainable house for the City (an offer that was not taken up). He has served for 60 years, and continues to serve, on the Anglican Church Council at St Lawrence’s Anglican Church in Dalkeith.
Gordon has served in possibly every position at the Nedlands Tennis Club including organising junior and senior pennant teams, sponsored verge garden competitions in the City of Nedlands, occasionally sponsored the Nedlands Yacht Club on the foreshore, and served on the Dalkeith Primary School Committee for a number of years as well as sponsoring some of their events.
With over 60 years of experience in real estate, Gordon believes that the Western Suburbs’ primary allure lies in its commitment to children’s education and community life. His passion for selling property in Dalkeith, Nedlands and Claremont stems from his belief in matching the right real estate to each client on an individual basis. He considers it essential to allow buyers and sellers to make their own decisions in their own time, with no pressure from him.
Christine and Christian Martineau (2023)
Two eminent City of Nedlands residents have officially been bestowed with the honorary status of Freeman of the City of Nedlands.
Christian Martineau and Christine Martineau were bestowed with the title at a formal ceremony at the Cottesloe Golf Club on the evening of Wednesday 22 November 2023.
The City of Nedlands Mayor, Fiona Argyle, said: “The City is proud to have officially recognised Christian and Christine Martineau for their contribution to our community, and to officially bestow the honorary title of Freeman of the City.
“I, myself am proud to be the person that initiated the nominations for our new Freemen. They are each outstanding individuals who have contributed so much for the betterment of the community.”
Mr and Mrs Martineau have served the community of the City of Nedlands, and the wider Perth community, for close to four decades. Their pride and joy, Martineau’s Patisserie, offered more than just baked goods – it served as a meeting place where the community could connect.
Martineau’s Patisserie opened in 1987 in the Captain Stirling Shopping Centre where it continued to operate until its recent closure.
“Martineau’s [Patisserie] has been the anchor of the Nedlands community. It was one of the few cafes that remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and became somewhat of a community centre for many generations over many years.” Mayor Argyle said in her speech at the formal ceremony.
Mr and Mrs Martineau officially bring the City’s total number of Freeman to six, the maximum number of persons that may hold the honorary title at a given time.
The Martineau’s join the City’s current Freeman of the City; Ruth Reid OAM, Gordon Davies, Sue Morey OAM FRCNA, and Mary ‘Lennie’ McCall AM.

During her time as Divisional Librarian of the State Bibliographic Centre from 1965 until 1982, Lennie used her skills to negotiate with Western Australian libraries to create union catalogues to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the inter-library loan service.
