Asbestos

The City of Nedlands Environmental Health team frequently receives enquiries from residents about safely managing asbestos. Properties built prior to 1988 are at higher risk of containing asbestos, as it was commonly used in construction and fencing materials during that period.

Because of the risks to both personal and community health, it is essential that residents understand the correct procedures for handling and disposing of asbestos. Most exposure typically occurs during home renovations or demolition activities.

Under the Health (Asbestos) Regulations 1992, anyone handling or disposing of asbestos must comply with strict requirements. If a business is contracted to remove more than 10 square metres of asbestos, it must hold a valid Asbestos Removal Licence. To find out who is licensed please refer to the following link WorkSafe licence and registration search | Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (commerce.wa.gov.au).
