Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos are an iconic part of Perth’s suburban landscape. Their distinctive calls, charismatic personalities, and lively feeding habits make them a familiar sight to residents and visitors alike.
Join Dr Christine Groom for an engaging presentation on how we can support the survival of these endangered birds through urban planning and community action. Based on her research and practical experience, Dr Groom will introduce Creating Black Cockatoo Friendly Suburbs—a visually engaging and easy-to-follow guide designed to help individuals and communities enhance urban biodiversity and create habitats that support Carnaby’s cockatoos.
Dr Groom is a member of BirdLife Australia and an Adjunct Research Fellow at The University of Western Australia. She lives in the Perth Hills, where Carnaby’s cockatoos regularly visit her garden to feed on native flora she’s planted for them. Her PhD research involved satellite tracking these birds across urban Perth to better understand their movements and habitat needs.
This event is ideal for nature lovers, gardeners, urban planners, and anyone interested in making a positive impact on local wildlife.
