The City of Nedlands is proud to celebrate the invaluable contribution of its volunteers during National Volunteer Week, Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering.
Held from 18–24 May, this year’s theme, “Your Year to Volunteer,” highlights that there is truly something for everyone in the world of volunteering and encourages people to explore opportunities that suit their skills and interests.
The City of Nedlands is fortunate to be supported by around 100 dedicated volunteers who generously give their time, skills, and energy to strengthen the local community. This includes volunteers who call Nedlands home, as well as those who travel from outside the area to support local programs, services, and events.
As part of this year’s celebrations, the City hosted a morning tea at Little Way Café on Wednesday, 20 May. Proudly sponsored by Lotterywest and Volunteering WA, the event brought together volunteers in the City’s service areas and environmental program to recognise their ongoing commitment and the positive impact they make across the community.
With the support of volunteers, the City can extend its services to include book clubs, language groups, school holiday programs, conservation projects, Positive Ageing activities, local history collection, art classes, and the delivery of library books to homebound residents. Their efforts help foster the vibrant community spirit that defines the City of Nedlands.
Among them is Kath, who at 90 years old has been supporting the City for an incredible 13 years. A former English teacher and avid reader, Kath first joined the Waratah Book Club and continues to facilitate a monthly book club group at Nedlands Library. “Volunteering has been an important part of my life for the past 40 years,” she said. “It’s a wonderful way to meet new people and discover what a wonderfully diverse community we are.” Kath is pictured alongside fellow volunteer Megan, who also supports the book club - a testament to the teamwork and connection that underpin the City’s volunteer programs.
Mayor Browner shared her appreciation, saying, “We are incredibly fortunate to have volunteers who give so much of themselves to the community. Their efforts make a meaningful difference, and we are proud to recognise the vital role they play in shaping the City of Nedlands.”
Community members inspired to make this their year to volunteer are encouraged to contact the City’s Volunteer Services team on 9273 3500.
