Owners and residents of Shenton Quarter strata management recently participated in a key waste education session led by Veolia's education team and the City's Waste Minimisation Coordinator.
The session, titled "Less Waste, Less Cost," was specifically organised to address issues with overflowing bins and improve recycling practices within the complex.
Non-compliance with correct waste sorting practices had resulted in additional fees and charges on the owners which is not a financially sustainable practice.
The key objective of the training was to educate participants on sorting waste correctly at the source into three main categories:
- Recyclables (yellow lid): Items such as paper, cardboard, clean containers, glass, and metals.
- Compostables (FOGO green lid): Primarily food scraps and leaf litter.
- Non-Recyclables (red lid): General waste destined for the landfill.
The session focused on three critical areas:
- Proper Sorting: Providing clear guides that illustrate which specific items belong in the Recycling, Compost/Organics, and General Waste bins.
- Waste Reduction: Encouraging the community to lessen overall consumption by using reusable products and making smart shopping choices.
- Safety and Contamination Prevention: Highlighting the negative impact of placing common contaminants, such as plastic bags, food waste, and batteries, into the wrong bins. This contamination can not only spoil entire loads of otherwise good recycling but, particularly with items like batteries, may result in a fire to the collection truck or processing facility.
By following proactive practices, Shenton Quarter residents are expected to significantly reduce bin overflow, lower waste disposal costs, and contribute to a more safe and sustainable community.
