Despite a week’s delay in holding the annual National School Tree Planting Day, due to inclement weather, students from Nedlands Primary School took the opportunity to help plant native seedlings along the Swan River Foreshore at Point Resolution Reserve.
The students, along with City of Nedlands Councillors Hengameh Amiry and Andrew Mangano and members of the Friends of Point Resolution, provided much appreciated environmental rehabilitation work. While students were planting on the edge of the Swan River they saw first-hand how tidal movement can damage the fragile river ecosystem.
City of Nedlands environmental conservation coordinator, Vicki Shannon says the school students play a vital role by providing ‘feet on the ground’ for projects such as this.
“These planting days are also a great opportunity to teach children how to care for and protect their natural environment and combat climate change at a community level,” Vicki said.
“These projects also help students learn about the role of nature in providing habitat for native wildlife.”
The City of Nedlands is preparing a Foreshore Management Plan for the Nedlands foreshore and is calling for community participation. Focus groups will be held on Saturday 13 August from 2pm to 4pm, Wednesday 17 August from 6pm to 8pm and Saturday 20 August from 10am to 12pm.
