The City of Nedlands has been officially recognised as an endorsed Gold Waterwise Council by The Hon. Minister Don Punch MLA, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs; Water; Climate Resilience, at the Water Corporation Waterwise Recognition Breakfast held Wednesday 7 May.
The Waterwise Council Program, which is jointly run by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and Water Corporation, supports Councils in adopting waterwise practices and acknowledges Councils demonstrating leadership in this area.
Mayor Fiona Argyle said the Gold Waterwise endorsement is a testament to the City’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and water efficiency in our community.
“Our City is home to some of the most beautiful streets and parks in the state, and we are working hard to ensure that we can maintain their beauty in a sustainable manner,’ Mayor Argyle said.
“Water is a precious resource and our City is dedicated to adopting waterwise practices in our operations and improving water efficiency within our community.”
Below are some recent initiatives that the City of Nedlands has implemented:
- Adoption of Local Planning Policy 1.3: Sustainable Design – Residential, to ensure new development is constructed and functions in an environmentally sustainable manner.
- Ongoing re-design of irrigation in parks and reserves including reduction of under-utilised turf areas and implementing “hydro-zoning” by planting native species.
- Regular meter reading and irrigation efficiency checks.
- Ongoing training and education for City staff to stay up-to-date with contemporary waterwise practices and products.
The Hon Minister Don Punch MLA, says, "Being waterwise is a shared responsibility, which is why it's great to see local government leading from the front when it comes to supporting collective water security across Western Australia."
