It's no laughing matter - please don't feed the kookaburras

City of Nedlands Parks and Ranger officers are calling for residents and visitors to be aware of kookaburras, following reports of the birds swooping on picnickers at locations along the river foreshore.

Kookaburras are large, carnivorous birds that quickly adapt to a new food source, including scraps hand fed by humans.

This behaviour only encourages birds to help themselves to picnic food – even when it is not being offered.

Signs are being placed in areas along the river foreshore where kookaburras are nesting and it is important to heed the warnings to keep adults and children safe from swooping.  Particular vigilance is necessary in and around the Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space in Dalkeith.

Although kookaburras are not native to Western Australia, they are protected by law and we need to learn to live with them, but not make them reliant on humans for their food.
