Writing Short Stories, with Rashida Murphy

Past Event

In this three-hour workshop with Dr Rashida Murphy attendees will study short stories and flash fiction viewed through a cultural and feminist lens. The focus will be on stories that navigate complexity, defy genre, and transport us to unfamiliar worlds while being emotionally satisfying.

Prompts to encourage writers to experiment and write their own stories will be provided.

The small group masterclass will focus on stories that are unexpected, clever, self-reflexive and linguistically brilliant, stories with both heart and intelligence.

Dr Murphy is the author of The Historian’s Daughter and The Bonesetter’s Fee & Other Stories.

Her work been shortlisted for the Dundee International Award, The Carmel Bird Award and the NSW Premier’s Literary Award. Her poetry and short fiction are published in journals and anthologies world-wide.

She has been a judge of The Hungerford Awards and The WA Premier’s Literary Awards, as well as judging numerous short story competitions including the Stuart and Hadow Short Story Prize for FAWWA.

She is a keen supporter of marginalised voices and seeks to amplify those voices both in her advocacy and her writing. Most recently she was thrilled to have her short memoir piece included in the Raine Square Short Story Dispenser.
