On 3 July 2023, the Local Government Advisory Board notified the City of Nedlands that a significant change was set to take place. The Governor, acting on the recommendation of the Minister for Local Government, has approved an order to amend the City's ward boundaries and reduce the number of councillor offices from twelve to eight.

The official publication of this order took place in the Government Gazette on 30 June 2023, setting the stage for a new phase in our city's governance. The revised ward boundaries and adjusted councillor numbers are scheduled to take effect from the upcoming local government elections on 21 October 2023.

Here is an overview of the changes:

  • The Coastal Districts Ward will be renamed the Coastal Ward, all other ward names will remain unchanged.
  • To achieve more even levels of representation, an alteration to the ward boundaries will take place between the Coastal and Hollywood Wards. This adjustment involves the area encompassed by Camelia Avenue to the North, Lantana Avenue to the West, Brockway Road to the East, and Alfred Road to the South. This area will transition from the current Coastal Ward to the Hollywood Ward.
  • The number of elected members will be reduced. The new structure will consist of a Mayor and eight Councillors, each representing the community's interests.
  • Consequently, there will be a reduction in the number of council offices per ward, moving from three to two.
  • Councillor terms of office for each ward will be established at the 2023 and 2025 ordinary elections, providing stability and continuity in local representation.
