Emergency Stop Highlights Hazardous Waste Risks in Nedlands

Published on Thursday, 27 November 2025 at 4:30:11 PM

This morning, our waste contractor was forced to make an emergency stop at Bruce and Edwards Street after smoke began rising from the truck’s cargo area.

The cause? Hazardous chemicals disposed of in a household rubbish bin.

Improper disposal of chemicals is a serious safety risk—not only for our contractors but for the entire community. Fires, injuries, and environmental damage can occur when hazardous items end up in residential bins.

The City of Nedlands is investigating this incident thoroughly. Thanks to the quick response from our contractor Veolia, the dumped waste has been safely removed.

What Should Never Go in Your Bin?

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) must never be placed in your general waste or recycling bin. This includes:

  • Acids
  • Chemicals
  • Batteries
  • Gas cylinders

Why Proper Disposal Matters

Incorrect disposal can lead to:
✅ Fires in collection trucks
✅ Serious injuries to workers
✅ Environmental contamination
