On Schools Clean-up Day this year, more than 30, Year Four students made the trek from Dalkeith Primary School to Point Resolution to help clean the river foreshore and protect local wildlife.
Arranged by the City of Nedlands and assisted by Dalkeith Primary School and Friends of Point Resolution, the Clean-up Day provided students with a front-line lesson on preserving and caring for the environment.
Mayor Fiona Argyle, equipped with her own gloves, greeted the students and congratulated them on their community spirit. The children were issued with protective gloves and recyclable rubbish bags.
“Community events like this are important partnerships that educate and encourage the next generation to be environmentally aware.
“Ïf we show young people how to preserve and care for the environment, they can go on to play their part in establishing a more sustainable and positive future,” Mayor Argyle said.
City of Nedlands Waste Minimisation Coordinator, Chaminda Mendis said the students’ efforts resulted in five bags of general rubbish and 10 bags of recyclable items being collected. This represented around 20 kilos of waste saved from contaminating the river.
“The students are to be congratulated for collecting everything from plastic bottles, aluminium cans and discarded cloth, to a broken bathroom basin,” Mr Mendis said.
“Schools Clean-up Day is also a pro-active way for students to demonstrate leadership skills and social responsibility.”
The City of Nedlands has an impressive record for engaging with local primary schools and the community to raise awareness of recycling and waste management programs.
Dalkeith Primary School Principal, Ms Sue Pekin, said the students were eager to take part in the Schools Clean-up Day and demonstrated great commitment to the environment and learning how to care for it, into the future.
"Days like this are an ideal way for children to learn more about their local surroundings and social responsibility.”
