The City of Nedlands is fortunate to have bushlands, parks and rivers that support over 400 native plants and wildlife. Many native plants, especially orchids, are on the brink of extinction due to people picking them.
Native orchids are highly vulnerable to extinction because once picked the deep underground tuber they are attached to dies. Like most wildflowers, they also rely on special microbes and fungi only found in bushlands.
You can help conserve and protect the City’s native orchids and plants by:
- Not picking native orchids or other wildflowers
- Keep recreational activities to designated paths and grassed ovals
- Ensure your pet does not enter bushlands or wetlands
- Do not remove wood, bark or other plant materials from natural areas
