At the Special Council Meeting held on 12 August 2026, elected members voted to adopt a rate rise of 14% and approve the annual budget for 2026/27.
It was a difficult and tough decision that signalled the start of the process to build a stronger financial future for the City.
Council recognises the seriousness of the City’s financial position and the need to make responsible decisions to restore long-term stability.
The rate rise is a clear indication of the scale of the task ahead and reflects Council’s commitment to rebuilding the City’s finances, strengthening essential services and placing the City of Nedlands on a more sustainable footing for the future.
While the decision will have an impact on ratepayers, it is part of a broader effort to address financial pressures transparently and ensure the City can continue to meet community expectations.
The City also understands that some ratepayers may experience financial hardship, and a hardship process is available to support those who need assistance. Ratepayers who are concerned about their ability to pay are encouraged to contact the City, where customer service staff are ready to help explain the options available and work through individual circumstances.
