At the Tresillian Art Centre’s first photography exhibition in ten years, Australian born, Swiss artist Mark Roethlisberger provides a rare insight into the lives and stories behind once loved but now forgotten buildings.
Mark has travelled through the remoteness of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia photographing a range of abandoned houses and buildings for this exhibition.
Abandoned Houses in Australia is a dramatic photographic exhibition featuring more than 80 breathtaking black and white images of starkly different structures; domestic and commercial, urban and outback.
Mark’s fascination with structure began in his Zurich-based career as a draughtsman, construction foreman and later as a professional photographer with a passion for architectural photography.
This led to 18 years photographing construction sites, architectural models, private houses, universities, hospitals and historic buildings – some more than 600 years old – and working with leading commercial architecture books and magazines.
Describing his work as ‘clear and simple’ Mark captures the drama of dereliction and abandonment in his classic images.
The photographs never appear sterile or overproduced despite his habit of returning to a site several times to capture the perfect light or cloud formation. Mark also takes the viewer to an unfamiliar vantage point to see a familiar subject from a different angle.
