The City of Nedlands' prestigious Emerge Youth Art Awards has surpassed all expectations this year, with a remarkable record of 172 entries received. The awards, open to Western Australian artists aged 12 to 25 years, received immense enthusiasm and talent from budding artists across the region.
City of Nedlands was thrilled to present an esteemed judging panel for this year's awards. Renowned Western Australian Artist, Judy Rogers, curated the 2023 exhibition, while local artists Ric Burkitt, Tania Fabris, and Jacqui Hills served as judges, carefully evaluating the exceptional artworks on display.
The awards presented by the Deputy Mayor Leo McManus on 22 July, carried a prize pool of $2,250, rewarding prize winners for their outstanding contributions. Among the prizes is the esteemed People's Choice Award, where visitors attending the Emerge exhibition at Tresillian Arts Centre will have the opportunity to cast their votes and influence the outcome.

Open Award First Prize: Kate Boultbee
Kate Boultbee's "Woodside Vista" (Oil on Canvas) captivates with its moody and meticulously-painted landscape. The contrasting elements of rolling darkness and golden crops in the foreground leave viewers pondering the artist's intent.
Resident's Award First Prize: Aisling Sharkey
Aisling Sharkey's "Stillborn" (Oil on Canvas) delicately weaves layers of oil paint to create an intriguing and shifting scene. The soft focus and intricate lines invite multiple interpretations, adding sophistication to the work.
Under 18 Award: Dale Watt
Dale Watt's "Tea for One" (Oil on Canvas) impresses with its clever use of colour and repetition, drawing attention to the central ceramic pot with a captivating composition.
Special mentions
The judging panel also bestowed special mentions to the following exceptional artworks:
- Kira Davey for "Guard" (Mixed Media Sculpture)
- Asher Beard for "Self-Portrait" (Oil on Canvas)
- Ruby Doran-Bryce for "Distortion" (Acrylic on Board)
- Noah Duncan for "Take Flight" (Photographic Print on Paper)
The exhibition promises to captivate art enthusiasts as it opens to the public for viewing from 24 July to 18 August, on weekdays between 9 am to 4 pm. The Tresillian Arts Centre will be adorned with an array of masterful pieces that showcase the exceptional talent of Western Australia's young artists.
