Remembrance Day 2023

On Saturday 11 November the City of Nedlands held its annual Remembrance Day Service at the Perth War Cemetery, Nedlands. The event was run in partnership with the Nedlands sub-branch of the Returned Services League (RSL).

Over 100 community members attend the ceremony, which was supported by the 502 Cadet Unit, Irwin Barracks, 11/28 RWAR Catafalque Party and also featured a vocalist from the Australian Army Band. Students from Loretto, Dalkeith and Nedlands primary schools contributed with a selection of poems.

The event was attended by the President of the Nedlands RSL, Max Hipkins, a representative from the Department of Veteran Affairs, Mr Shad Hussanee, Ms Kate Chaney MP, Federal Member for Curtin, Dr Katrina Stratton MLA, Member for Nedlands and City of Nedlands Mayor, Fiona Argyle.

Remembrance Day was first marked by allied countries after World War I, in which more than 60,000 Australians lost their lives.

The Perth War Cemetery is located on Smyth Road, Nedlands and was established in 1942. It contains 497 war graves and is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
