The Avenue Roundabout Open Ahead of Schedule

The City of Nedlands is pleased to announce the completion of the first major milestone in The Avenue road rehabilitation project - the construction of a new roundabout designed to improve safety and traffic flow.

This important project is proudly funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, which targets roads with a proven accident history as part of their commitment to reduce crashes on Australian roads.

The roundabout has been delivered ahead of schedule thanks to an advanced, integrated design process that streamlined every stage of the project.

The City’s civil designers developed a detailed 3D vertical design to establish precise geometry, ensuring smooth grading and effective stormwater management. This reduces the risk of aquaplaning and improves long-term durability.

The 3D model was shared with surveyors and contractors, enabling machine-controlled pavement profiling equipment to cut and fill material with exceptional accuracy. The design levels closely matched the existing intersection, meaning excavation and fill requirements were minimal - saving time, reducing costs, and limiting disruption for the community.

This end-to-end workflow was made possible by recent advancements in civil design software, survey technology, and machine-control systems – combined with the City’s commitment to professional development for all staff.

By integrating design, survey, and construction activities through a single 3D model, the project team significantly accelerated delivery while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

“The City of Nedlands is proud to deliver The Avenue roundabout ahead of schedule by using smart design and new technology” said Chief Commissioner, David Caddy. “We remain dedicated to delivering safer roads for all users, now and into the future.”

Works will continue along The Avenue until late February 2026, weather permitting, to install mid-block treatments.
