The City of Nedlands 2026 tree planting program is wrapping up, with hundreds of new trees now finding a home across our neighbourhoods.
These trees are an important part of the City's recently endorsed Urban Forest Strategy 2025-2035, which aims to increase and protect urban tree canopy cover to create cooler, more liveable, resilient and healthy communities.
While the City will continue to support newly planted trees through its establishment watering program, residents can play a valuable role in helping their verge tree thrive.
Watering your tree
The City will water your verge tree during its first 48 months of establishment. However, during periods of hot, dry or windy weather, additional watering by residents can make a significant difference to tree health and growth.
When watering your tree:
- Water slowly and deeply at the base of the tree to ensure moisture reaches the root zone
- Consider hand watering, connecting to nearby reticulation where practical or simply pouring a bucket of water around your tree.
Mulch matters
Mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature and protect developing roots.
Please:
- Keep the mulch in place around your new tree.
- Leave a small gap between the mulch and the trunk to prevent rot and disease.
Protect your tree
Young trees can be easily damaged during routine activities.
Please avoid:
- Damage from lawn mowers and line trimmers.
- Parking vehicles near the tree.
- Storing materials around the trunk.
- Attaching signs, ropes, wires or decorations to branches or the trunk.
Leave the pruning to us
To support healthy development and structure, please do not prune your verge tree unless directed by the City. Early growth is important for the tree's long-term health.
